Murmullos de corrientes lejanas

This project is a sound composition created from recordings of different water sources—rivers, ocean waves, and various flowing waters—that I have captured in Ecuador over the past few years. These sounds come from different places, yet they all seem to tell a shared story.

I am interested in water as much for its sounds as for what it symbolizes. It carries within it a form of memory: it erases, transforms, and transports the stories it encounters. Whether it rushes through a torrent, flows peacefully, or breaks into waves, it is always the same water circulating and connecting territories.

Through this installation, I invite the audience to explore echoes of the past—fragments of stories that have been erased yet persist, resonating in the present.

These recordings are played through an analog system I developed, based on the resonances of cotton threads. This system creates a random composition in which the flows of water become the true protagonists. The vibrations of the compositions are transmitted through these cotton threads, blending together to create new compositions.

I use the mechanism of the familiar string telephone, in an analog form, to transmit resonances and frequencies through matter before amplifying and diffusing them. Through this process, the original source is distorted and transformed.

Across time and space, these stories evolve and change, like tales from different origins that, as they intertwine, sometimes become confused, slightly chaotic, and somewhat mysterious. They weave an ever-changing soundscape, where each listening reveals new nuances.

The sounds intersect, overlap, and sometimes fade away, like memories that emerge and then disappear. These murmurs seem to carry traces of a world in constant transformation—an elusive memory that continually reinvents itself.
